Thank You, Hitchcock!

I had a joyous time yesterday in Scarsdale reconnecting with friends at Hitchcock Presbyterian Church (and seeing Michelle and Andy Loeb from Forest Hills!). I led a discussion of chapter 3 of Brian McLaren’s book, The Great Spiritual Migration: How the World's Largest Religion Is Seeking a Better Way to Be Christian . Then I shared "The Greedy Python" with the kids, and preached "How to Avoid Hades on Earth" for the adults. A Month On...

As a pastor, I always felt it was an indictment when someone said, "Pastor, I know how busy you are..." It meant that I was projecting a harried, unavailable presence that I had vowed to avoid. I have made a promise to myself never to say, "I am so busy in retirement, I don't know how I had time to work..." And yet this first month has been full! I have had the freedom to: get to Presbytery for my official retirement recognition. attend my 50th college reunion (above). spend time with my brother and sister, their families, and Janice and our four children, and more, at the memorial weekend for my mother. ( https://cindylohr.blogspot.com/ ) sit with Janice's father at his bedside in his final days and hours. go to Citi Field twice--for a Mets-Cardinals game with family on Father's Day, and for a "Dead & Co." concert. try out a couple of neighboring churches and go back to the Unitarian Fellowship of Ridgewood. end the month

Another Sad Day

The administration has set refugee admissions for 2020 at a devastating 18,000 , cutting refugee admissions to an unprecedented historic low and further decimating the refugee resettlement program. For nearly four decades, the average number of refugees admitted to the US each year has been 95,000. After a virtual shutdown of the U.S. asylum system, this announcement comes as a tragic blow not only to vulnerable people fleeing violence and persecution, but also to this country’s humanitarian legacy. In addition, the President has issued an executive order allowing states and local governments to deny entry to refugees already approved for travel from entering those states. This is nothing short of a refugee ban. The Administration is constricting the heart of America, and ignoring the Golden Rule. We are better than this!
