Another Sad Day

The administration has set refugee admissions for 2020 at a devastating 18,000 , cutting refugee admissions to an unprecedented historic low and further decimating the refugee resettlement program. For nearly four decades, the average number of refugees admitted to the US each year has been 95,000. After a virtual shutdown of the U.S. asylum system, this announcement comes as a tragic blow not only to vulnerable people fleeing violence and persecution, but also to this country’s humanitarian legacy. In addition, the President has issued an executive order allowing states and local governments to deny entry to refugees already approved for travel from entering those states. This is nothing short of a refugee ban. The Administration is constricting the heart of America, and ignoring the Golden Rule. We are better than this! "Dream On" -- A Sermon at Warren Point Presbyterian Church, Dec. 8

On Sunday, I was invited to preach and moderate a congregational meeting at Warren Point Presbyterian Church. The reason for the meeting is expressed in the motion that was reluctantly passed by the congregation after being assured that even if they voted "NO," their pastor would still retire: That the Congregation of the Warren Point Presbyterian Church join with the Rev. Jeffrey N. Leininger in requesting the Presbytery of the Palisades to dissolve the pastoral relationship now existing between them, effective January 31, 2020, and grant him the status of honorably retired. The congregation consents to the dissolution in accordance with The Book of Order G-2.0901, and agrees that the Session shall (1) work out terms for Pastor Leininger's occupancy of the manse beyond the date of dissolution and (2) pay any final compensation due him by January 31, 2020. Jeff has been pastor there since September 1979. I met him when I moved to Franklin Lakes in 1985....

I had a joyous time yesterday in Scarsdale reconnecting with friends at Hitchcock Presbyterian Church (and seeing Michelle and Andy Loeb from Forest Hills!). I led a discussion of chapter 3 of Brian McLaren’s book, The Great Spiritual Migration: How the World's Largest Religion Is Seeking a Better Way to Be Christian . Then I shared "The Greedy Python" with the kids, and preached "How to Avoid Hades on Earth" for the adults.
